Julia Massey: Music

Salty Schemes

(Julia Massey)
swaying with the wind and water
skin to skin, mother to daughter
dreaming the same dreams about
their father
although her compass is revered
it lacks her mother's inner ear
that's kept the two together
all these years

the ocean hummed,
hello my child,
let's rock together
for a while
and when the sun comes up
i'll carry you to shore
and when you strum
on your guitar
lift your eyes up
to the north star
and know that it's
reflecting on me evermore

when the wake is
in between
the crashing waves
it often seems
that it has caught her
in its salty schemes
schemes to take
her child away
through webs of
landless interplay
to depths too deep to fear
or wash away

but when everybody's
justified
to say that everybody
lied
they all forgot that
everybody dies
it sees them in their suffering
and gathers all the air they breath
then spreads it to
the inner living being
the inner living being

the ocean hummed,
hello my child,
let's rock together
for a while
and when the sun comes up
i'll carry you to shore
and when you strum
on your guitar
lift your eyes up
to the north star
and know that it's
reflecting on me evermore
evermore
evermore
